Corns, Calluses & Blisters

Daily life is hard on feet.

With each step taken, the pressure of our full body weight is applied to the soles of our feet. In cases where the person has structural issues or footwear issues, this action cause uneven wear, additional friction and more forceful compression of the skin and may create a foot issues and conditions. Corns, callus and blisters are some of them.

Corns

It is possible to experience mild symptoms of Corns. They generally develop on top and side surfaces of the foot. Corns are small, dense layers of dead skin cells, caused by excessive pressure or rubbing on the skin. They are the body’s way of protecting the affected areas of the foot. To build the corn, the body gradually lays down layer upon layer of extra skin cells that act as padding against abuse and stress.

Causes: There are a range of reasons for the body to form corns, ranging from ill-fitting shoes (too tight or too loose and sloppy) deformed toes that are not accommodated by shoes; the presence of bunions, hammer toes, mallet toes or claw toes; walking issue (gait) and poorly made shoes that rub the skin. Symptoms: Redness, pain, a slight swelling and some inflammation around the area

Treatment: Podiatrists treat corns in a variety of ways. Your ‘Report on Findings’ from our podiatrist will explain the method of treatment for your corn. depending on where it is, size, pressure and pain levels and what measures are needed to keep it under control. Once corn develop it rarely goes away fully. Off-loading pressure on the affected area is important, as is, assessment of your footwear. Dead skin may be trimmed. And thicker sock varieties recommended for when playing sports.

Calluses

A Callus is the formation of compressed, dry, dead skin found on the heel, large toe and ball of the foot. It cannot be washed away and moisturizer can only make the thick dense skin feel less dry.

Causes: Causes range from improper footwear for your foot type (most common); deformed toes that are not accommodated by shoes; the presence of bunions, walking issues (gait) and poorly made shoes with limited arch support.

Symptoms: Compressed, dry, dead skin found on the heel, large toe or ball of the foot that can cause discomfort, pain, cracking, splitting, bleeding and infection if not corrected.

Treatment: Correct footwear for your foot type will be discussed and advised. If the issued is biomechanical, then the use of custom-made and well fitted orthotic devices will evenly distribute your body weight along the foot to prevent excessive pressure on any one spot and achieve other outcomes as well. Routine podiatry care with attendance to the callused areas will regulate and minimize the build up. Your feet will feel better for it and your podiatrist will have regular opportunities to monitor the general health of your feet and change occurring over time.

Blisters

Blisters are a bodily response to injury that triggers the build up of protective fluids under the skin at an injury site. Causes: The injury is caused by frictional pressure that is the result of excessive rubbing on the skin from ill -fitting shoes or poorly made shoes.

Symptoms: A soft fluid sac that becomes sore, inflamed and sensitive to touch, especially when the skin is broken. If left untreated or unaddressed, the pain may increase and infection may result.

Treatment: Do not remove the flap of skin over the blister unless dirty, torn or pus has formed under the surface. Wash the area with soapy water and apply an antibiotic ointment and clean dressing. Change the dressings if the area becomes wet or soiled. Padding to offload against any frictional pressure, especially in wear-prone areas can be a protective strategy to avoid future irritation, pain, inflammation or infection. Your podiatrist will show you how. Blister packs are also available at the clinic for your convenience. The key to blister prevention is to get to the source of why you are getting them. Your podiatrist will show you how.
